India and Indonesia are similar, yet distances apart.

DEMOCRACY IN INDIA:

  • World’s largest democracy.
  • Found Independence in the year 1947
  • Jawaharlal Nehru-Co-founder of NAM
  • Large population and Social diversity
  • Still developing and grappling with  poverty, red tape and inadequate infrastructure.
  • India’s economic growth has been anemic for decades
  • PM Narasimha Rao + Finance Minister Manmohan Singh = Reforming the economy and moving towards market economy
  • Here, state is managed by a party and led by a CM.
  • Before elections Indians have references on a political party’s performance.
  • Parliamentary Form of Govt

PRESENT

  • Modi’s meteoric rise,BJP-led coalition swept the parliament
  • The newly established government has started working with full confidence and support

DEMOCRACY IN INDONESIA

  • World’s third largest democracy
  • Found independence in the year 1945
  • Sukarno-Co-founder of NAM
  • Large population and Social diversity
  • Still developing and grappling with  poverty, red tape and inadequate infrastructure.
  • Achieved democracy in 1998
  • Indonesia under president Soeharto‘s administration was touted as an economic miracle.
  • Indonesia has been under President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s (SBY) administration for 10 years.
  • Economy has grown by around 5 percent during his two terms, which brought Indonesia into the G20 as a country shaping the global economy.
  • Presidential Form of Govt
  • Legislative elections do not necessarily correspond with the presidential election

coverage-map

  • Joko “Jokowi” Widodo was seen as the best choice to replace SBY and bring Indonesians to prosperity
  • Jokowi’s administration – instead of working to catch up with the progress of other developing nations – has to start quarrelling with the House about many issues for the next five years.

They are so much similar, yet there are no significant cultural, economic ties between the two.
